The FAI SGP de France, taking place at Rion-des-Landes Aerodrome in Nouvelle Aquitaine, has started yesterday with the typical excitement associated with the Grand Prix format of racing.
Most of the France national team members are participating in this great event, including the current 18m female World Champion and Vice-Champion, Mélanie Gadoulet, and Anne Ducarouge.
The UK, Belgium and Germany are presented respectively by well-known pilots Mike Young, Pierre De Broqueville and Steffen Trapp.
In an attempt to reduce the performance differences of the participating gliders a maximum wing loading of 48kg/m2 is permitted. But it seems that most French participants have still selected JS-gliders as their weapon of choice: twelve JS1s / JS3s, four ASG29s, and two Ventus 2/Ventus 3s are competing. It will always be interesting how these gliders are comparing with the weight limitations and what glider is the most suitable for this type of contest.
